Short Lived Break
AUG
4
Travelling through regional and rural Australia is not a privilege many people get to experience and we are grateful for the people we meet and the good times we have. Many times we sit back and recall stories and tails of days on the road.
As the second half of the year roars its way round, we are starting to realize not only does it not slow down but drastically speeding up.
This year is definitely keeping us on our toes. As the short break ends we will be making our way out to Colac, followed by Clare and West Wyalong for our August event. Find detailed information in our calendar.
Cheeky push here, join us on facebook In The Bin for frequent calls outs from the road.
Special shout out to Katie Frank, our American.
Your presence will be surely missed around here.
We love you.

Trip to Tully
JULY
12
So Emma and Luke just flew back from Tully yesterday. They had a very successful visit with the community. Emma and Luke got to work with a mature age group this time. The group found interest in documentaries this week, leading to two mockumentaries and one promotional documentaries. Each film told a great story about Tully and captured beautiful scenery of the town. One film from the workshop, Take a Turn Into Tully, explored with a traveler into the town and showed the beautiful architecture Tully has to offer. Another film, Betty and the Bullrout, followed an American documentary maker through Tully's nearby Alligator's Nest park and watch as her search for alligators turns into one for the bullrout fish. The final student film, Seedplot, investigated the mystery behind Tully being Australia's wettest town. The film interviewed the people of Tully to find out the comical secret behind why it is always raining. All three films were a great hit at the festival.
There was a good turn out at the festival Saturday night. Both locals and visitors were present. Along the 3 student films, 10 professional short films were shown, with each film receiving an enthusiastic applause from the audience. In The Bin would like to thank Tully, CRACA, and the students for inviting In The Bin to share its passion for cultural film with the community. Luke and Emma hope to visit again!
Look for us in the upcoming July and August locations in Mackay, Gladstone, Moruya, Coonamble and Derby.

Good news! In The Bin has now partnered up with BIFF (Brisbane International Film Festival) and is having great success. Both BIFF and In The Bin share a passion for film culture in Queensland. Since BIFF is known to an audience of more than 375,000, working with BIFF has greatly increased the opportunity of exposure for In The Bin. In The Bin looks forward to working with such a capable, professional and useful company.
Additionally, In The Bin's tourers, Luke and Emma, finished trips to Dubbo, Coonabarabran and Hilston. All tours were very successful with much anticipation for future visits. For the workshops done while touring, each was a three day event. The first day revolves around the students learning about preproduction which involves scripting and storyboarding. On the second day, the students get involved with hands-on filming where they get to create scenes from a script they have put together. Finally, on the third day the students get to edit all of the film. Students get to work with recent editing programs and equipment. All workshops and festivals had positive feedback and great work was produced.
Here is some of the positive feedback In The Bin received from the most recent tours...
"I was just blown away by what was achieved in just three days and it was all done in such a positive (and fun) environment. [Emma and Luke] were professional at all times and had a very good rapport with the students. In turn the kids responded to being given so much creative freedom and responsibility with the equipment etc. I will be speaking to my principal tomorrow and hope that we can book you guys again for next year." --Mary Doolan, Coonabarabran
"You truly have something unique here with ‘In the Bin’ and Mary’s [above] feedback to you is also indicative of how Coonabarabran High School really, really enjoyed the program and received a tremendous amount of inspiration!" --Merry Spencer, Coonabarabran
Luke and Emma's next stop is here in Queensland. We're touring next in Derby, Toowoomba, Townsville, Mt. Isa, Cairns, Longreach, Charters Towers and Rockhampton. Catch us in our upcoming tour locations in Tully, Mackay, or Gladstone during July.

Come one, come all. It’s festival time once again. As the months tick over is time again for the annually awaited In The Bin Short Film Festival held on Gold Coast during May this year.
The entries are now officially closed for this year’s competition. Thanks to all who have participated, we have happily received over 300 entries and are currently going through the selection process.
The selected films will be screened at The Currumbin festival which will be kicking off on the 8th of May this year.
As you may be aware we have just completed our small but nonetheless successful tour of Western Australia and would like to take this opportunity to thank our media partner Triple J for the national coverage they have provided and supporters as well as those of you who took part in the events. You are why we tour! As you know when one thing comes to an end another adventure begins, so we are off to Batemans Bay, Warwick and then back onto the coast, of course, for our In The Bin Gold Coast Festival.
For those of you that have been part of our workshops, you would know that the tours would not be the same without Luke or Emma. With their passion for film and the creative arts extending its way through their work, they have been able to bring out an enthusiasm for film in students from all different walks of life and cultural backgrounds, educating rural and regional communities in areas such as operating camera, using sound and lighting, green-screen and editing on professional systems.
The Education Program is a very important part of In The Bin and with over a year of experience each in the company Luke and Emma are a great represent of In The Bin.

We are set for one heck of a tour in 2010, and what a great way to start it, big congrats to Luke Doolan, Drew Bailey and the rest of the crew for their Academy Award nomination of “Miracle Fish”, winner of Best Film at In The Bin in 2009!!! If you haven’t seen it you can check it out as part of our 2010 tour along with some other great films. The Sundance Award Winning Film “El Ataque Los Robots de Nebulosa-5 – Attack of the Robots from Nebula-5”, The Melbourne International Film Festival Hit “Two Men” and the Queensland New Film makers awarded underdog “Broken Road”. This is just a tast of the films that are touring with over 20 films hitting the road there will be a variety to suit any communities needs.
As usual In The Bin programs the very best in the world of short film, mixing high end short films with smart amateur shorts. This is reflective of our past years of screenings where many films have gone on to be nominated and awarded Academy Awards including the likes of “Harvey Krumpet” and “Two Cars One Night”.

2009 Wrap-Up

What a year we had last year, it blew in one ear and out the other for us. Over 60 locations experience In The Bin, 54 of them we Education Programs, over 1000 students participated, over 200 short films were produced, and the van traveled over 70,000km. So over all I think it was a success… We had a great finale event in Goulburn this year after three local workshops there we screened 11 short films that were made during the Education Program along with a great mix of family films from In The Bin. From Carnarvon WA to Weipa QLD the response from all communities was great and the program was extremely well received.
Of course one of the favorite films of the tour was “Spider” from Nash Edgerton who has gone on to direct the excellent Australian feature “The Square”. Other enjoyed films in 2009’s tour were “Porque Hay Cosas Que Nunca – Because There are Things We Never Forget”, “Dugong” and the continuing success of Cameron Edser with “Animal Instinct” The entire Touring Program though has been a huge success for 2009 and with our program ready for 2010’s tour re are really excited to see the developments.
2010 Touring Program is now online. Check it out here, there are some great films in store for Australia this year including this year’s Academy Award nominated thriller “Miracle Fish” , The Sundance Award Winning Film “El Ataque Los Robots de Nebulosa-5 – Attack of the Robots from Nebula-5”, The Melbourne International Film Festival Hit “Two Men” and the Queensland New Film makers awarded underdog “Broken Road”. This is just a tast of the films that are touring with over 20 films hitting the road there will be a variety to suit any communities needs.
